Can a back injury cause chest pain?

If you had a back injury caused in an accident, where would you expect the pain to be? You’d be right in saying you’d expect the pain to be in your back above all else. Yet it is possible for pain to occur in other areas as well. So, when you ask can a back injury cause chest pain, the answer is yes.

A stress fracture of the rib can cause both back and chest pain, depending on which rib has been fractured. It can also cause difficulty and pain when trying to breathe. Additionally, bruising to the back, usually from an impact injury, can cause soft tissue damage to the back muscles and other structures. Any pain in this area has the potential to radiate through to the front of your body as well.

How can a back injury cause chest pain?

Any damage done to discs or the spinal column can also result in pain in other areas. If you have suffered any kind of back injury, it is advisable to seek a proper diagnosis from your GP. Obviously, if the accident was serious or you are in considerable pain, a visit to A&E would be preferable.

If there is swelling around the spine, it can lead to pressure on nerves, and this can be felt in many areas of the body. Muscle spasms and strains can be very painful and can radiate through into the chest as well, and may take time to heal.
