Nowadays we often board passenger jets without any worries about our personal safety, and why should we?
Apart from the obvious, yet minuscule, chance of the plane actually crashing, what other dangers could we possibly face?
Well there are quite a few actually, and air turbulence related accidents are right at the top of the list.
Air turbulence injuries
Most of us have probably experienced some form or other of clear air turbulence whilst travelling on a passenger jet. One of the first things that we are required to do, after being instructed, is to fasten our seat-belts. There is a very good reason for this: when the airplane enters an area of turbulence, the flight can become very bumpy indeed.
If you are not secured into your seat safely, it has been known for passengers to bang their head on the plane ceiling. Also if the overhead compartments have not been closed properly, hand luggage can easily spring out and cause an injury to the passengers. Of course, the airline cannot predict when this turbulence is going to strike, but they are usually able to give some advance warning.
Although the turbulence cannot be prevented, the cabin staff needs to warn the passengers in advance regarding the seat-belt precaution. If they fail to oversee this action, and a passenger is injured, the cabin staff may have displayed negligence.
How to claim
If you are injured as a result of airplane turbulence and can prove that you were not warned by the cabin staff, you may be able to claim for air turbulence injury compensation. The airline has a duty of care to its passengers and when they fail in this regard, they should be held responsible for any injuries that follow the turbulence.
If this happens to you, please inform the cabin staff immediately and seek medical assistance. Speak to other passengers and see if anyone else is injured and ask for some witnesses to add credibility to your claim case.
