    Cafe claims: Raised floor tiles

When you think of cafes and the potential causes of slips, trips and falls, the most obvious example that leaps to mind is problems caused by spillages. However, another, less well-known, but equally problematic cause of accidents in cafes is that of uneven and raised floor tiles.

There are a few reasons why raised floor tiles cause so many cafe accidents.

Firstly, in the vast majority of places, the flooring is the same colour. This makes it almost impossible for the naked eye to perceive slight differences in height. Often, you don’t realise a raised tile is present until you stub a toe or suffer a trip or fall.

Secondly, eyes are not always closely looking at where your feet are when you first enter a cafe. Whether it’s looking up at a menu or specials board, or sussing out somewhere to sit, there are numerous distractions to take your eyes off the floor.

Thirdly, you’d hardly expect the floors of a professional establishment, that relies on public custom for trade, to have uneven floors, so why would your eyes be peeled for uneven floors?

Trips and falls on raised floor tiles can be a serious and frustrating public accident, simply because the subsequent injuries are so frequently wildly disproportionate to the seemingly innocuous incident that caused them.

It’s not unheard of for these sorts of trips and falls to cause broken bones. The unexpected nature of the trip means the victim is often totally unprepared, and unable to react in time to protect themselves.

Cafe owners – be they individuals or chains of a larger company – are responsible for the health and safety of their customers. Accidents in public places because of health and safety negligence, leaves them vulnerable to claims of public injury compensation.

Any cafe that has raised floor tiles should have the affected area clearly labelled with sufficiently easy to read warnings, alerting customers to the potential danger.

Any problems with raised floor tiles should be fixed and put right as soon as possible.

If you suffer a trip or fall in a public place, then Accident Advice Helpline can establish whether you have a chance of a successful public accident claim.
