Botched facelift leaves mum scarred for life

By David Brown on October 8, 2014

Pearl Richman was left with scars after a botched facelift carried out by a ‘seagull surgeon’. These types of surgeons are foreign doctors who often travel to the UK to carry out botched medical procedures before returning home – and they’re becoming increasingly common.

Mrs Richman was operated on by Italian surgeon Marco Moraci and developed necrosis (skin cell death) soon after her botched facelift, which left her in agony and with permanent scarring to her face. After taking her case to court, she was awarded £43,000 in compensation, but has yet to receive a penny for her £8,000 surgery. Harley Medical Group, the company which organised her surgery, went into administration and was not held legally responsible for the botched surgery. As the surgeon has not reported the case, his insurance company won’t pay out.

Now Mrs Richmond must pursue the case abroad in order to get her compensation. She wasn’t warned about the risk of necrosis and believes that the government should ensure surgeons are held accountable for errors through insurance and qualifications.

Have you been injured during cosmetic surgery?

Cosmetic surgery carries with it certain risks, but it is important that procedures are carried out by qualified, experienced cosmetic surgeons, who ensure that patients are informed before they decide to go ahead with any procedure. Here are just a few of the most common procedures that take place in the UK.

    • Breast augmentation or reduction
    • Rhinoplasty (nose job)
    • Facelift
    • Botox
    • Liposuction

All of these procedures carry a certain level of risk. However when carried out under the proper conditions and by experienced surgeons, risks can be minimised. Medical negligence can have serious consequences, as the story above shows. A negligent surgeon could leave you permanently scarred or even fighting for your life. But you may be able to claim compensation for your pain and suffering.
