Botched excess skin operation leaves grandmother in constant pain

A grandmother who underwent an excess skin operation has won a six-figure payout after botched surgery left her in agonising pain. Nicola Woolley underwent a gastric bypass to help her lose a significant amount of weight after being told she could die from her morbid obesity. The patient was left with excess folds of skin after the bypass but the NHS agreed to remove this. However, surgeons removed too much skin which caused an infection leaving Mrs Woolley in constant agony. In addition, the excessive scarring has left Mrs Woolley unable to sit down without experiencing extreme pain and doctors have stated there is nothing more they can do to help her. After the excess skin operation, Mrs Woolley was diagnosed with a skin condition called epidermolysis which causes blistering of the skin.

Although her condition failed to improve, Mrs Woolley was discharged only to return the next day with an elevated temperature and oozing from her wounds. She was admitted into surgery which failed to help and underwent a further nine procedures which did not correct the original scarring. Mrs Woolley has now been left with life-changing injuries.

    Surgery and medical negligence compensation

An excess skin operation like this won is designed to remove the skin, causing minimal scarring. In this case, the patient unfortunately suffered life-altering pain and scarring which will affect her for the rest of her life. An operation which causes unforeseen complications or injury to the patient may have been botched so, where there is evidence that negligence took place, the patient can claim for a settlement. Of course, there are instances where some scarring or pain may be a side-effect of a procedure so it is important to factor this in. However, if the pain is excessive, you contract repeated infections or you have suffered from excessive scarring, your surgery may have been botched.
