    Treating hypothermia

    Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops below 35̊C. You may be at risk of developing hypothermia if you are travelling to cold countries, you are involved in outdoor pursuits, such as hiking or cycling in the mountains or you work outdoors. If you suffer injuries or illness as a result of accidents at work, you may be eligible for work injury compensation.

    Who is at risk of hypothermia?

    If you work outdoors or you spend prolonged periods of time in the great outdoors as part of your job, you may be at risk of developing hypothermia; examples may include:

    • construction workers
    • agricultural workers
    • park keepers and rangers
    • professional climbers and skiers
    • coastguards
    • mountain rescue teams
    • lifeguards
    • fishermen
    • engineers

    Common signs of hypothermia include shivering, fast heartbeat and paleness, which give way to vigorous shaking, lethargy, confusion and loss of consciousness as the condition progresses.

    How is hypothermia treated?

    The aim of treatment for hypothermia is to prevent any more heat being lost from the body; it is important to increase body temperature gently and gradually, as doing so quickly can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure. If you come across somebody with hypothermia at work, move them to a warm, safe place, give them a hot drink and some high-energy food, such as a chocolate bar, and cover them in a warm blanket, taking extra care to protect their head and torso from the cold. If they are wearing wet clothing, gently remove and replace with dry clothes before placing a blanket, coats or towels on them.

    Is it possible to claim for hypothermia?
