    Top five potential accident claims for a coffee shop worker

    Accidents at work occur across all sectors. However, in some industries you may be surprised to hear the extent of the occupational injuries that can be sustained. This is true of the barista profession. While you may expect slips, trips and falls behind the counter or scalds and burns from spilled drinks, there are a number of other conditions to consider.

    Five potential accident claims for a barista include the following:

    • Slips, trips and falls;
    • Scalds and burns;
    • Repetitive strain injury — barista wrist;
    • Tennis elbow — barista elbow; and
    • Tendonitis.

    The birth of ‘barista wrist’

    You don’t expect to experience prolonged pain from your work in a coffee shop, however, the repetitive strain injury which affects so many workers in the sector has been given the name barista wrist. Caused simply by making too many cups of coffee, barista wrist is an occupational condition which develops due to the repeated motion required to stamp espresso while operating coffee machines.

    Barista elbow is another newly-coined term for a similar work-related injury, but one which affects the elbow. It is more commonly known as tennis or golfer’s elbow.

    For some, these occupational conditions become severe. The New York Post reported on a former barista who sustained medial epicondylitis due to the job role. The 23-year-old was placed in a brace for a total of six months and was left with no option but to resign.
