Top 5 accident hotspots in South Yorkshire

Every time you head out in the car, your safety is dependent not only on your own skill and driving ability, but the vigilance and sense of other road users.

It is a sad fact that the consequences of road traffic accidents tend to be serious. Given the speeds often involved, it is something of a given that traffic crash injuries are likely to be substantial. In the worst cases, they can be fatal.

Of course, it is also true that some areas are more prone to traffic crashes than others. Here are five areas of South Yorkshire that require extra special care and attention.

    1. A621
This stretch of tarmac which runs between Baslow in Derbyshire and Totley was named the third most dangerous road in Britain by the Road Safety Foundation back in 2010. Though the number of car collisions was lower than in the previous three years, there is still clearly some way to go before motorists can feel totally safe driving here.
    2. A625 – A623
This 13km-section of road was named just behind the A621 in the aforementioned survey. Again, numbers of traffic accidents were down on previous years but success is relative – they were only down by one.
    3. A61
This major trunk road has a deserved reputation as one of the most road accident-prone in the United Kingdom. Part of the problem is perhaps the near-constant changing from two lanes to one and fluctuating speed limits as it passes through town centres, including the football stadiums of Sheffield United and Wednesday. Drivers are regularly having to alter their speed and cannot allow their concentration to waver, which is not always easy on long journeys.
    4. M1
Motorway driving can be hazardous at the best of times and plans to allow motorists to use the hard shoulder of the M1 between junctions 32 and 35A have been met with scepticism. Police have expressed concerns that the changes increase the risk of a road accident, particularly for emergency services.
    5. A6135
A five-mile section of this road came under fire from the Road Safety Markings Association for having poor and badly worn centre line markings, something which can easily cause a car crash or motorcycle accident.

If you are injured in a traffic collision, Accident Advice Helpline can get you back on your feet with the road accident compensation you may well be due.
