    Survivor Guide: Baby-sitting

Most baby sitters are friends of the family and in this case, when the child knows the sitter and the sitter knows the family well, there are few rules and regulations beyond common sense. Most parents of toddlers and older children make sure that the sitter is well known to the child before leaving them and from the baby sitters point of view, this should be an essential precursor to looking after them for the evening. Many children have very precise bedtime rituals and it can be all but impossible to get them to sleep without following them to the letter.

Contact numbers are vital when baby-sitting

It is also essential when baby-sitting to have all of the relevant contact numbers from the parents before they go out and – a sometimes forgotten issue – how far away they will be when it comes to getting them home in an emergency. If a child is taken ill or hurt, a baby sitter needs to know whether to call medical assistance or wait until the parents get back. If they are an hour away, or just next door, this will clearly have a huge impact in this decision making process. A baby sitter also needs to know where everything is – and that includes that tricky step in the dark bit of the hall!

I was injured in someone else’s house. Can I claim against their insurance?

Householders all carry insurance (it is normally a condition of mortgage lending and it certainly is a sensible precaution in any event) and this will have a clause covering injury to others on the premises. The situation regarding a baby sitter may be a little difficult because it will be necessary to decide whether they are an employee of the parents and home owners or not. In most cases, baby sitters are simply friends of the family but some people use agencies and in this case the claim will probably be more clear cut.
