    Signs of food poisoning

Most of the time, we go out for a meal, enjoy the food and the company, and plan our next visit. Sadly, going to a restaurant is not always a positive experience. If you’ve experienced signs of food poisoning after eating out or ordering a takeaway, you may be able to claim compensation. Nobody wants to spend money on a meal that is going to make them poorly, and if there is a case for negligence, you have every right to make a claim.

What are the most common signs of food poisoning?

In most cases, the signs of food poisoning will become apparent within 24-48 hours after eating. Most commonly, people experience vomiting and diarrhoea, but these symptoms of food poisoning can also be accompanied by nausea, stomach cramps, and generally feeling unwell. When you have food poisoning, it can take you a while to recover. You lose fluid when you vomit, which can contribute to dehydration, and it tends to make you lose your appetite.

If you have experienced signs of food poisoning, you won’t usually need medical treatment. However, you should see a doctor if you’ve been unable to keep any food or fluids down for more than 48 hours or if you develop very severe symptoms. It’s also wise to seek advice if you’re pregnant, or you have underlying health issues. Get plenty of rest to help you recover, and try and sip water throughout the day. When you feel able, try and eat snacks such as plain toast or crackers.

Can I make a claim for food poisoning?

If you’ve suffered food poisoning after eating at a restaurant, café or bar, you may be able to claim compensation for food poisoning. In order to make a successful claim, you must be able to prove that the you were not liable for your illness, and that the facility you visited displayed negligence, which resulted in your illness.
