Is it safe to swim in the Thames?

The Thames is the famous river that runs through the middle of London and is one of the key attractions of the city. There are often people who swim in the Thames, usually for charity, but if you are on holiday, is it really safe to swim in? Or could you end up having a travel accident?

A swim in the Thames: A travel accident waiting to happen?

The Thames may be a famous icon of London but it is not advisable to swim in it unless you want to have a travel accident. The main reason for this is that the Thames carries all different types of viruses and bacteria that, if ingested, can cause a nasty bout of gastrointestinal problems and a nasty travel injury.

As well as this, the river is regularly used by boats and other river craft vehicles so there is a risk of a travel accident involving one of these if you did not spot it or they did not see you. Either way, the Thames is not the safest of rivers to swim in no matter how many people do it.

How to avoid a travel accident if you do go swimming in the Thames

If you have to go swimming in the Thames there are certain precautions you can take in order to help prevent a travel accident. Avoid swallowing any of the water as this can and may well cause you problems. Also, if you have any broken skin or wounds, avoid the Thames or at least cover them up with a waterproof dressing or the risk of infection could be very high.
