    Safe practice of cleaning gutters

Making sure your gutters are clear of debris should be a matter of routine maintenance to your home. The water which becomes trapped in your gutters may freeze over the winter, forming ice dams which in turn weigh down the gutters, which could potentially lead to damaging your gutters, roof or even injury to yourself as the result of falling debris. It is important to ensure you follow safe practice of cleaning gutters to reduce the chances of suffering a slip, trip or fall.

    Ladder safety

Always ensure that you let someone know when you intend to use a ladder to carry out any maintenance on your property. This will ensure that help is quickly on hand in the case of a slip or fall from height. Ensure you use a sturdy and practical ladder for carrying out maintenance work; a step ladder would not be advisable in this case.

    Protective clothing

Gutters can become clogged with all manner of debris including rotten leaves and even bird or rodent droppings. Wearing gloves when cleaning your gutters will help prevent injuries to your hands such as cuts and scratches, and can help to prevent the spread of infection that can occur as the result of contact with animal faeces. Wearing rubber shoes with adequate grip will help prevent the chances of a slip, trip or fall and eye protection such as goggles will help prevent debris from becoming lodged in your eye.

    Conduct a visual inspection

Ensure that when cleaning your gutters, there are no obvious hazards such as electrical cables or broken guttering which may increase the chances of suffering an accident. Perform a quick visual inspection from the ground of where you intend to place your ladder and perform another quick check after ascending the ladder to check for hazards on the roof.

Have you been injured when cleaning your gutters and someone else was to blame? Perhaps you yourself work as a specialist in gutter cleaning and have suffered an accident at work?
