Preventing public accidents: reading on the sidewalk

In Summer, there is nothing quite as lovely as strolling in the sun with a new paperback but it’s important to remember to stay safe when walking on the sidewalks, to prevent public accidents.

Slips, trips and falls are some of the most common public accidents, especially so near to our homes. In the belief that we know the area well, it can be all too easy to switch off under the summer rays and trip and fall over crumbling cobbles, potholes or other pavement problems.

Injuries caused by trips and falls

While it may seem safer to wander mindlessly during the summer months, when ice and snow is a distant memory, remember that outdoor accidents occur all year round, and little slip, trip or fall could lead to myriad injuries including:

    • Sprains or strains to the ankle, lower limbs and back
    • Lacerations
    • Fractures
    • Head injuries, including concussion

Increased risk of pedestrian road accidents

Walking without due attention to roads will also increase your chances of falling subject to a road traffic accident, causing serious injury and even death.

Although motorists should give pedestrians the right of way, it does not mean to say that the risk of road-related accidents is null should you walk out onto the road unexpectedly.

    Claiming for public accidents

With all this considered, it is fair to say that many of us do take care when out and about. If you are careful to mind your surroundings and use public areas with caution, it may be that you are not to blame for your outdoor accident.

In cases such as these, if the accident occurred within the last three years, and you can provide ample evidence to suggest you are not liable for the harm you have suffered, you could have an eligible case to claim personal injury compensation.

To determine your eligibility, speak with a law firm, such as Accident Advice Helpline.
