Potential theme park accidents: Mechanical failure

Theme park accidents caused by mechanical failure of rides are fortunately much rarer than injuries by slips, trips and falls. When they do happen, they are typically due to one of two possible circumstances, such as poor maintenance, age, design or safety faults.

    Poor maintenance and age

Continually in use for as much as 14 hours per day, day in day out and year after year, ride mechanisms undergo a lot of physical stress. As a result, even well-maintained mechanisms can and will eventually fail. Adding age and weather corrosion into the equation makes it a wonder that injuries by ride failure are not more common than they are.

When rides do fail, they can suddenly stop, eject riders, or collide with one another. Sometimes a mechanical failure means a ride fails to stop as it should, leaving riders disoriented and nauseous. This in turn could easily result in whiplash symptoms or injuries by tripping or slipping.

    Poor design and manufacturing defects

Theme and amusements parks are under constant pressure to introduce new, ever more exciting rides in order to remain competitive. Unfortunately, this pressure sometimes tempts owners to open rides to the eager public before sufficient tests for design and safety flaws have been carried out.

While it may well take weeks, even months, and thousands of rides before a defect manifests itself, when it does happen, the resulting accident could be disastrous.

    The risks

Depending on how high and how fast a ride goes and exactly what happens, the injuries caused by mechanical failure of theme park rides can be far more severe than those caused by slipping, tripping or falling.

In some especially tragic cases of mechanical failure, riders have even been known to lose their young lives.
