    What obligations do theme park owners have to protect visitors?

    With all the flashing lights, adrenalin-pumping rides and fun activities, theme parks provide an incredible setting for enjoyable days out with friends and family.

    If you’re planning a fun-packed trip to the theme park, the last thing you want is to end up nursing injuries sustained from slips, trips or falls or an accident on a ride, so here are some simple pointers to help you make the most of your day out and avoid nasty injuries.

    Staying safe at the theme park

    Theme parks are often very busy and they are awash with lights, noises and distractions. If you’re running for rides or you can’t contain your excitement when looking around, it’s easy to lose concentration and trip or slip; try to walk and avoid rushing, look where you’re going at all times, avoid using your phone while walking and wear sensible footwear. Take extra care when in crowds and be careful if the ground is wet or icy.

    Watch out for obstructions, such as bags and coats, by the entrance to the rides and look out for litter on paths. If you’re heading to a foot outlet or a picnic site, keep your eyes peeled for spillages and warning signs.

    Always ensure you follow the safety instructions before you get on the ride; remove loose items, such as glasses or slip-on shoes and ensure that any safety equipment, such as harnesses or belts, is secured firmly.

    What obligations do theme park owners have to protect the public?

    Any company or individual that manages a public space or facility is liable to ensure that the necessary steps are taken to protect members of the public. Health and safety guidelines should be enforced to reduce the risk of public place injuries and slips, trips and falls in a public place; examples of these measures include:

    • ensuring that spillages are cleaned up promptly
    • placing warning signs to alert people to wet floors or damaged flooring
    • ensuring that all rides are checked thoroughly and frequently and meet safety standards
    • ensuring that all members of staff have the relevant training to operate rides and react in emergency situations
    • performing frequent risk assessment
