    Mining accidents: Dust explosions

    Mining accidents: Dust explosions

Coal mining is a hazardous profession, presenting numerous risks to workers that are rarely found in any other sector. Due to the nature of the job, accidents at work go above and beyond slips, trips and falls and include injuries and illnesses caused by gases, dust and explosions.

Mining accidents at work: Dust explosions

When mining for coal, it is inevitable that an amount of coal dust will be released into the air. Coal dust, when suspended in the air, presents a risk of combustion, and particularly so when the dust is exposed to a methane explosion.

For coal dust to explode, oxygen must be present, the coal dust must be thick and suspended and there must be an element involved for ignition. Ignition can be caused by a factor as simple as friction, however fire, methane explosions and machinery are also known triggers.

Who is to blame for my coal mining injury?

If you have been involved in a coal mining injury while at work, through no fault of your own, it is likely that the liability could lie with your employer.

While on duty, your employer has a legal responsibility to ensure your health and safety. Any occupational injuries incurred at no fault of your own could mean that you are entitled to personal injury compensation.

To be eligible you must be able to provide a good case of blame and also have proof of how the injury you sustained has affected your day-to-day life.
