    How many stops should I make during a long drive?

    According to the Department for Transport, around 1 in 5 road traffic accidents in the UK are linked to driver fatigue. Driving when you’re tired puts you and other road users at risk of a car crash, so here are some top tips to beat tiredness and ensure that you’re safe on the roads generally, and during a long drive.

    Break up journeys

    If you’re travelling the length or breadth of the country, it may be best to break up your journey and arrange to stop off en route and complete the trip over two days. Book a hotel room or stay with a friend or relative who lives on the way; you’ll feel refreshed and ready for stage two of the journey if you manage to get a good night’s sleep and your risk of being involved in a collision with another vehicle will be reduced.

    Stop at the services

    The services are there to provide convenient stopping points for drivers and enable them to access facilities such as petrol stations, accommodation, restaurants and toilets, so make use of them. The advice from experts at the Department of Transport is to stop every two to three hours for a minimum of 15 minutes. During your stop, get out of the car, stretch your legs with a walk and have a drink and something to eat. If you’re driving during the night, you may need to take more regular stops, as you will naturally start to feel more tired. If you get to the stage when you feel really tired, stop for longer and have a sleep.

    Get plenty of sleep

    Before you head off on a long journey, make sure you get a good night’s sleep; you should never start a journey feeling tired, as this is a major cause of road accidents.

    If you’re starting to flag, there are certain things you can do to try and raise your energy levels and stave off tiredness; these include:
