What makes the A285 one of Britain’s worst roads?

Are you wondering what makes the A285 one of Britain’s worst roads? The 12-mile stretch of road regularly features in reports about the most dangerous roads in the country. Fatal and serious crashes on the road increased by 16% between 2007 and 2012. The road is located in West Sussex between Chichester and Petworth and was the only road in the south of England to feature in a 2008 Road Safety Foundation report. Read on to learn more about what makes the A285 one of Britain’s worst roads.

Why is the A285 one of Britain’s worst roads?

A 2014 report featured the A285 at the top of a list of roads that had seen big increases in accidents or seen little no change on accident levels. The foundation said the changes that had been implemented to make the road safer were not sufficient, adding that “more far-reaching intervention” was needed.

The road features a series of significant elevation changes, tight turns and long straights. Many drivers have been injured and worse after losing control when they have upped their speed. It has regularly been described as “unpredictable” due to its surprisingly sharp corners and dips and falls that prevent sufficient visibility.
