Atmospheric conditions can greatly increase the chances of being involved in a number of different types of accidents. In this article, we’ll be having a look at some of the various accidents than can be caused by cold weather fronts.
What is a cold weather front?
A cold front is the edge of a large mass of cool air which displaces warm air at a lower level. This can cause a number of atmospheric conditions such as a drastic change in temperature, heavy precipitation and strong gusty winds.
What kind of accidents can such conditions cause?
- Slips, trips and falls: The increase in precipitation coupled with gusty winds equates to a higher risk of suffering a slip, trip or fall. This occurs as surfaces become more slippery due to run-off from the rain and precipitation and increased difficulty in keeping balance in strong winds.
- Road traffic accidents: Just as slips or trips are more likely to occur in cold weather fronts, so too are road traffic collisions. Rain and wind can greatly reduce visibility and handling when driving and accordingly increases the chances of your vehicle being involved in an accident.
- Being struck by an object: The sharp winds that occur during a cold front can reach high velocity. As a result, objects such as roof tiles may become dislodged in a sudden gust of wind and can strike any unfortunate passers-by or cause damage to a vehicle.
