    Internet sensation accidents: NekNomination

    Internet sensation accidents: NekNomination

Believed to have started as recently as the beginning of 2013 in Perth, Australia, NekNomination is an extremely dangerous, social media-driven drinking craze involving participants drinking potentially lethal concoctions of alcohol, bleach or other harmful substances and bodily fluids; filming their exploits, posting the clips on social media networks and then nominating others to do the same.

    The dangers of this practice

The risks involved in NekNomination, which is practised especially by young people and has even spread to children as young as nine or 10 years old, were described by police as catastrophic and include:

    • Acute alcohol poisoning
    • Poisoning by toxic substances
    • Slips, trips and falls while drunk
    • Motoring accidents caused by intoxicated drivers

Alcohol poisoning and consumption of toxic substances can cause anything from minor stomach upsets to comas and death, while injuries by car accidents and slip, trip or fall injuries can range anywhere between minor cuts and bruises to life-changing and fatal injuries.

    Legal and financial consequences

Following a series of high-profile incidents linked to this Internet craze resulting in deaths, people no longer have the option to claim that they are unaware of the potential risks of NekNomination. According to lawyers, participants who dare others to get involved could subsequently end up facing manslaughter charges if those they nominated are killed. What’s more, families who have lost a loved one or individuals injured by accidents caused by participants may be eligible to claim personal injury compensation. The financial implications for those liable to pay this compensation could be devastating.
