Identifying the threat of gas on UK caravan holidays

Many UK caravan holidays are cut short as a result of gas-related accidents. In order to successfully prevent such accidents on holiday, it is necessary to first of all identify the possible threats of gas at camping sites.

Camping cookers, lighting and even cooling appliances are often run on gas. Faulty or incorrectly installed appliances, such as those in static caravans, can potentially cause leaks. Poor ventilation could add to the problem by trapping fumes, resulting explosions or fires, and serious personal injuries.

Poorly positioned appliances, gas cylinders or connecting piping could also result in trips and falls.

    Incorrect use

Careless or incorrect use of gas appliances could also cause accidents on UK caravan holidays. Here, too, explosions may cause preventable personal injuries. Forgetting to turn off gas lighting or cookers could also cause fires.

    Cylinders in storage

Most caravan sites have stores of gas cylinders for hire. Exposure of such cylinders to excessive heat, positioning in direct sunlight, for example, or naked flames, could easily result in explosions injuring anyone close by.

    Play equipment

Some injuries by falling are caused by children becoming too boisterous on play equipment or equipment that is defective. Faulty camping chairs can also represent a risk of injury by falling.

    Other camping incidents

Fortunately, camping gas accidents are comparatively rare. Most injuries while camping are, in fact, caused by slips, trips and falls.

Slip injuries are typically the result of slipping on wet or greasy surfaces. Campsites present myriad trip hazards, including guy ropes and tent pegs, steps leading up to caravan entrances, uneven ground, and trailer bars.

    Accidents on UK caravan holidays

If you were injured by gas accidentsslips, falls or trips, or indeed any other holiday accident, you may well qualify for travel injury compensation. To be eligible, you must have been the victim of an accident caused by someone or something else, no more than three years ago.
