Floods can be very dangerous, life-threatening and home destroying, depending on the nature of the flood. Many of us associate floods with the dark days of autumn or winter, but it is not unheard of for many parts of the world to experience floods during the summer months.
Accidents can occur during floods (winter or summer), especially bad trips and falls and some of these can be fatal. Here at Accident Advice Helpline we deal with accidents that have occurred from a number of causes, including floods.
Incidents that occur more during winter floods
Due to the plummeting temperatures and the influx of rain that starts to appear during the latter months of the year, floods that occur around this time can cause an enormous amount of accidents. The limited light during the shorter days mean that any floods that start late evening or even during the night can cause dreadful falls and slips, as it is much more difficult to see where you are going.
Most floods mean there will be a power cut and with an even more limited view as to both objects, but also the extent and depth of water you may or may not be faced with it is important that if you live in a frequently flood-affected area you keep a couple of torches close by in the case of an emergency to limit slips, trips and falls and to be able to react to the hazards you are faced with appropriately.
Accidents that are more likely to occur during summer floods
The idea of a summer flood sounds like there are less risks however this is not the case. Although floods are less likely in the summer months, slips and falls are always very dangerous when there are high volumes of water around.
It is important to not touch electrical equipment during or after a flood until it has been checked by a professional. This can cause a lot of accidents both minor and severe. Floods during the summer are sometimes less expected, and this lack of preparation means they can prove more dangerous.
