    Five tips in recovering from an Achilles injury


    Your Achilles tendon is one of the largest in the human body and also one of the hardest to repair following injury. Infamously known as a common sport-related injury that causes immense pain for runners and team-sport participants alike, recovering from an Achilles injury can be a strenuous and agonising process.

    So while slips, trips and falls may be at the top of the causes for sport-related accidents and injury, overuse of the Achilles tendon can lead to a far more severe sporting injury.

    Beyond slips and trips: Causes of Achilles injury

    Often, the best way to minimise the risk of sport-related injury is to educate yourself on the factors that cause them to occur. In the case of an Achilles injury, there are no inflammatory cells within the tendon and therefore, any injury must be due to degeneration.

    Common causes of Achilles tendon injury include, but are not limited to:

    • Overuse
    • Pronation, from the feet
    • Lack of flexibility
    • Changes in training footwear, terrain or intensity
    • Oral steroids

    By maintaining a good general level of fitness, you will minimise the risk of sustaining any sport-related injury, including damage to the Achilles tendon.

    Yet for this specific sporting injury, there are a number of ways to help your body recover, should you find yourself suffering from damage to your Achilles.

    • Rest from running or sport while you still feel burning or pain in the area
    • Stretch your calf, from a static stretch position, three times a day for one-minute, five reps per session
    • Use ice on the Achilles injury for 20 to 30 minutes a day, rather than medication, such as anti-inflammatories
    • Compress your leg with an elasticated bandage and elevate it on a pillow while sitting or lying down
    • If pain persists after a week, go to see your GP, you may need a scan to determine the level of damage done to your Achilles tendon
