Hyperventilation or excessive breathing is usually caused by anxiety. It’s commonly experienced after psychological or emotional shock and may go hand-in-hand with a panic attack. If you think somebody may be hyperventilating, you should look out for the following symptoms:
- Attention-seeking behaviour
- Unusually fast, deep breathing
- Feeling faint
- Trembling or tingling in hands and feet
When treating hyperventilation, you need to keep the casualty calm by removing them from the source of the distress and reassuring them. You should speak to them firmly in a reassuring and kind manner, and try to remove them to a quiet place if possible. If this is not possible, you should ask bystanders to move back or leave. Treating hyperventilation is all about helping the person to relax, and you should encourage them to see their doctor about preventing panic attacks in the future.
