A heart attack usually occurs when the heart muscle’s blood supply is blocked, for example by a blood clot. This could cause the heart to stop beating. Look out for the following signs that somebody is having a heart attack:
- Crushing or vice like central chest pain
- Ashen skin or blue lips
- Pain which spreads to the arms, neck and jaw
- Rapid and weak pulse
- Sweating, with skin that is cold to the touch
You should always call 999 straight away and let them know you suspect the patient is having a heart attack. When treating a heart attack, sit the patient in the ‘W’ position, sitting at about 75 degrees to the ground with their knees bent. If you have any aspirin available, and if the casualty is not allergic to aspirin, give them a 300mg tablet to chew slowly. If they have angina medication available, help them to take it. You should always monitor their breathing and pulse until the ambulance arrives.
