    Many people use exercise protein powders and shakes as part of their training regime. Protein helps to build muscle mass, but is exercise protein dangerous and should you be wary of consuming too much protein in order to prevent injuries?

    Is exercise protein dangerous?

    In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of protein products among gym-goers. The idea behind using protein powders is to increase the intake of protein as a means of building muscle tissue and strength. The worry is that often, people take in far more exercise protein than they need. The body only requires around 10-14 additional grams of protein per day (as well as protein from your normal daily diet) to build a pound of muscle mass. Some exercise protein products contain up to 80 grams in each serving, which is far higher than the recommended intake.

    Excessive protein production can take its toll on your liver and kidneys and anything you don’t actually need is broken down to produce energy, meaning you’ll have more energy to burn off.

    Exercising safely

    Exercise has a wealth of benefits for your physical health and mental well-being, but there can be risks involved in playing sport and training on a regular basis. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and improve your fitness sensibly:

    • wear suitable footwear to avoid slip and trip injuries
    • use protective equipment for contact and fighting sports
    • gradually increase training and take days off to prevent over-training and repetitive strain injury
    • always warm up and cool down thoroughly
    • watch out for warning signs related to hidden steps, slippery floors or broken equipment at the gym or leisure centre
    • learn how to use the machines properly; if you’re not familiar with the gym, book an induction
    • seek advice from a nutritionist or a personal trainer if you want to use exercise protein as part of your training program
