Ensure your house is safe to work in for hired help

It is well known that all employers must take reasonable measures to protect the health and safety of their employees to minimise the risk of accidents at work. However, what isn’t so clear is your responsibility to ensure your house is safe to work in when you hire self-employed help.

Ensure your house is safe to work in

Even if you hire self-employed help, it is important that you ensure your house is safe to work in. Despite the fact that self-employed workers are responsible for their own health and safety, should an issue in your home cause them harm, you could still be liable for their work-related injury and/or illness.

Although you are not their employer, when you hire self-employed help you must ensure your house is safe to work in, as you are still responsible for providing a sound work environment.

    Claiming for accidents at work

If you have suffered an accident at work while undertaking hired duties and you believe you are not to blame for the harm and distress you have suffered, you may be able to claim personal injury compensation.

So long as you are able to provide medical evidence of the illness or injury suffered, and evidence to suggest liability lies outside of your hands, you could have a strong case to claim work-related personal injury compensation.
