Electricity is a dangerous element if you do not take certain precautions with your appliances. Common oversights, such as frayed wires, for example, can cause all different types of injuries from a slip, trip or fall from the sheer force of the shock to a much fatal injury.
Ways in which to avoid a fall injury due to an electric shock
One of the most common ways in which useful household appliance become potential causes of slips, trips and falls or worse is through the wire. This carries a lot of electricity through it and is usually covered, which makes it much safer. However, when the wire become frayed this is when you could potentially sustain much worse injuries than that of a slip, trip or fall.
When wires are frayed they become unsafe and unstable as they are no longer contained in a safe environment. The best thing to do when this happens to a small appliance is to throw it out and buy a new one. Do not be tempted just to wrap tape around the frayed end to keep it together as it is still unstable and you and your family are still at risk of far worse than sustaining a simple slip, trip or fall injury.
How about larger appliances?
If the wires are frayed on a larger, more expensive appliance such as a washing machine then you may not want to discard or simply don’t have the money to replace it. In this case you should get a qualified electrician to come in and replace the wire. Don’t attempt to do this yourself as this could easily cause a nasty injury as well as a fall injury if you get shocked.
In the meantime, turn off that appliance and unplug it to make sure there is no electricity running through it. This will temporarily make it safe and prevent any nasty accident claims.
