Most dangerous sunbathing spots: Beach at Gustaf III Airport, Saint Barthélemy

When it comes to accidents and injuries on holiday arising from sunburn and related issues from spending too much time out in the sunshine, being involved in a plane crash doesn’t exactly immediately spring to mind.

For sun-worshippers at the Beach at Gustaf III Airport, Saint Barthélemy, this can be a very real danger. A tiny French island located in the Caribbean, Saint Barthélemy looks for all the world as if it is simply another slice of paradise on earth in this idyllic region. However, with a tiny airport directly behind the beach and a runway that ends right on the beach, soaking up the rays can mean taking your life into your own hands.

What are potential claims for travel accident compensation at the Beach at Gustaf III Airport, Saint Barthélemy?

The runway begins at the base of a hill. The concrete stretches for a mere 2,100 feet before landing right on the beach. If you are so inclined, you can lie out in the sun right next to the landing strip and let the small planes pass a matter of metres over your head. Whilst this may provide the occasional welcome bout of shade from the ever-present sun as the shadows of the vehicles briefly engulf you, there are surely safer ways to guard against sunburn and other holiday illnesses occurring.

Because of the size of the airport, only small aeroplanes can land here. Major planes have to land at St Maarten, a neighbouring island. However, small aeroplanes can still cause significant accidents on holiday. Given the miniscule margin for error involved, it is of little surprise that accidents can, and do, happen at the Beach at Gustaf III Airport, Saint Barthélemy.

The most recent incident occurred in May 2008. A small Piper Aztec plane simply ran out of runway after landing and was unable to stop before crashing onto the beach. Mercifully, no-one was seriously hurt but it shows just how easily accidents and injuries on holiday can occur on this unique, picturesque, yet dangerous, island.
