    Most dangerous roads: Northumberland

Northumberland has the dubious distinction of being home to some of the most dangerous roads in the UK.

    A1 Hampeth – River Coquet

Named as the country’s most dangerous stretch of road in 2012, the 4.5-mile dual-carriageway section of the A1 between the River Coquet and Hampeth is a particularly dangerous stretch of road responsible for many tragic car accidents.

    Swarland/Guyzance junction

The Swarland/Guyzance junction with the A1 near Acklington is especially dangerous, as south-bound vehicles wishing to turn left towards Acklington must brake sharply just as they are coming over the crest of a hill. Suddenly slowing down to as little as 20 miles per hour in fast moving traffic obviously represents a serious risk of accidents on the road.

    Other dangerous roads

Stretches of the A696 and the A697 are also widely known to be among Northumberland’s motoring accident hot spots. Having claimed many lives between them, these roads, like the A1, should be navigated with utmost care and attention at all times if potentially serious, even fatal car and motorcycling accidents are to be avoided.

    Careless road users

Unfortunately, visitors to the area often do not realise just how dangerous these roads can be. Even some locals seem to be unaware (or maybe simply do not care) of the risks they are taking when speeding or perhaps using their mobile phones on these roads. The resulting vehicle collisions often cause serious personal injuries to drivers and passengers alike. Tragically, in many cases these car crash injuries are fatal.
