Department of Transport figure show that almost 23,000 people were injured in road traffic accidents involving cyclists in a five year period between 2009 and 2013. If you’ve been injured in a cycling accident in the last three years and you were not to blame, you may have a case for road accident compensation.

What causes cycling injuries and accidents?

The most common causes of cycling accidents include:

    • errors made by car drivers, including failing to look and speeding
    • being hit by car doors when a driver or passenger has failed to look
    • drivers crossing the path of a cyclist
    • loss of control of the bike
    • cyclist failing to look
    • sudden lane changes made by car drivers

Cycle accidents are most likely to occur at peak times during the morning and late afternoon. This is because more vehicles are on the road than at any other time of the day.

Accident black spots: Vauxhall Bridge/Wandsworth Road

In a list of London cycling black spots, which was compiled based on figures from the Department for Transport for 2009-2013, Vauxhall Bridge/Wandsworth Road came 7th. There were 31 incidents involving cyclists in a five-year period. Elephant and Castle roundabout topped the list, with 80 accidents.

In response to the figures, driving safety organisations, Scotland Yard and the Government announced measures to increase road user safety on major roads and try to reduce the number of people injured on the roads in London. Examples of these measures include Operation Safeway, which involved placing 600 police officers at 166 junctions across the city at peak commuter times.
