Home coffee machines: Convenient but hazardous?

Home coffee machines have taken the world by storm, promising to recreate the experience of a café-bought coffee in the comfort of your own home. Although home coffee machines may be convenient and represent good value for money, they can also be dangerous and it’s important to use and maintain them properly in a bid to reduce burns and scalds and household accidents, such as slips, trips and falls.

How dangerous are home coffee machines?

Coffee machines are generally considered to be very safe provided that you buy a model, which meets the relevant safety standards, and you use the machine in the right way. Most people have absolutely no trouble making coffees, but accidents do happen and there is a risk of injury, most commonly caused by mechanical faults. Potential injuries include burns and scalds caused by hot coffee or steam, electrical injuries and slips and trips caused by spillages created by a fault, which prevents the machine from stopping when it is supposed to.

Tips when buying and operating a home coffee machine

In order to make sure you have a good quality product, it’s always a good idea to choose a reputable brand and buy a new model, rather than a second hand machine. Ensure the box is sealed and that the product comes with a manufacturer’s guarantee. When operating your machine, always follow the instructions carefully and never leave the appliance unattended. Take care when brewing coffee, as there is a risk of scalds and burn injuries and keep the machine out of the reach of pets and children.

Can I make a claim for an injury caused by a home coffee machine?

If you’ve suffered injuries in a public place or at home after making a drink with a coffee machine, you may be eligible for personal injury compensation in cases where you were not to blame for the accident. If, for example, a hotel provided a faulty machine and you suffered public place injuries, or you sustained burn injuries because your machine at home was defective, you may be able to claim no win, no fee* compensation.

If the incident happened within the last 3 years and you have evidence to support your public place accident claim, call Accident Advice Helpline today on 0800 689 0500 to take advantage of a simple stress-free claims process and expert advice provided by personal injury lawyers with extensive experience in defective product claims.
