Most common injuries associated with water guns

Summer is coming, and for many of us, this means spending hours in the garden with the kids splashing around in paddling pools and chasing after each other with water guns. When it’s sunny outside, there’s no better way to spend time with family and friends than getting into the garden and enjoying the fresh air.

Most common injuries caused by water guns

If you’re playing with water guns, your aim is probably to soak the people around you. While this can be great fun, there may be a risk of injury involved in messing around with water pistols. If you’re running around and the floor is wet, there’s a high risk of injuries caused by slips, trips and falls. Injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to life-changing head and spinal injuries. It’s very unlikely that you’ll hurt anyone when using water guns, but be wary of firing at close range, especially if you’ve got a powerful gun or there are small children around. The impact of the stream on the skin may cause bruising and pain.

    Garden safety tips

If you are spending the afternoon in the garden, take these safety tips on board to minimise the risk of garden accidents:

    • Supervise children at all times
    • Take extra care when using a paddling pool or a swimming pool
    • Wear suitable footwear to prevent slips and trips
    • If you’re using a barbecue, keep well clear of children and pets
    • Keep pathways and stairwells clear
    • Take extra care if patios or decking areas are slippery after using water guns

If you’ve been injured in the garden, seek advice for your injuries. In most cases, garden accidents occur as a result of errors on your part, for example, trying to run on a slippery patio in flip flops. However, there are cases where you may sustain injuries through no fault of your own. If you were injured after using faulty equipment, for example, you may have a viable personal injury compensation claim.
