Most common causes of spinal cord damage

The spinal cord is one of the most important parts of the human body. The spinal cord is the collection of nerves that sends messages between the brain and the rest of the body.  When the spinal cord suffers trauma, usually easy, everyday things, such as moving and walking and even sensing feeling are suddenly difficult or impossible to execute, either temporarily, or sometimes, in rare cases, permanently. There are many ways that the spinal cord can be damaged, but here are the most common causes.

    Slips, trips and falls

Suffering a slip or trip can cause spinal cord damage. If someone falls and lands in a way that impacts the back and the spinal nerves, the spinal cord can be damaged. To avoid a trip or fall injury like this, always ensure that you take safety precautions when using a ladder or stool, and make sure all surfaces are kept free of slippery substances and obstacles.

Many associate polio with “the old days”, but polio can still be caught, and can still cause the same amount of damage to your spinal cord as a slip injury. Polio can easily be passed from person to person, such as simply by eating food infected by the virus, but the good news is that children are vaccinated against it with their pre-school injections, and most adults received the vaccine in childhood.

    Road traffic accidents

Spinal cord damage is a common consequence of car accidents. When the spine and nerve endings are impacted during a car collision, the accident can cause the spinal cord to become damaged.

    Industrial accidents

If you work in the industrial sector, you will be familiar with the risks that come with using industrial equipment. If certain safety precautions aren’t taken when working in an industrial environment, all parts of the body are in danger, including the spinal cord. To make sure you avoid a fall accident or an injury that could impact your spinal cord in your industrial job, ensure you wear safety equipment at all times and take regular breaks to avoid complacency.
