Can you get injured whilst using pressure washers?

Used to clean anything from cars, paths and other surfaces to tools, pressure washers are a common sight in service stations, other commercial settings and even people’s gardens. A combination of electricity, water under high pressure and heat does, however, mean the risk of getting injured whilst using pressure washers is significant.

    The dangers of pressure washers

If, for example, the powerful jet should accidentally hit a person, resulting injuries can range from minor bruises to serious facial or eye injuries. In a similar fashion, excessively hot water could cause potentially serious injuries by scalding. Poor maintenance could lead to injuries by electrocution, fire or explosions.

Preventing someone getting injured whilst using pressure washers

Using pressure washers safely and maintaining them in good, safe working order is, therefore, imperative to prevent anyone getting injured whilst using pressure washers. Service station owners and employers have a duty of care towards customers and employees to prevent injuries. This includes keeping pressure washers in safe working order and ensuring training in safely using them is provided.

    Right to compensation

If you were injured using a pressure washer at a service station or at work, you could be entitled to personal injury compensation if your injury was caused by:

    • Poor maintenance

    • Improper use due to lack of training

    • Another person’s improper behaviour while using a pressure washer
