Beach accidents: Jellyfish stings in Australia

Endless sunny beaches and outstanding snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing sites make Australia a highly popular holiday destination. Unfortunately, some holidays are ruined by accidents on the beach.

    Beach accidents in Australia

In addition to severe sunburns, sun stroke and the occasional cut, bruise or broken limb in surfing, diving or snorkelling accidents, holidaymakers in Australia are also at risk of having their vacation ruined by jellyfish stings.

    Box Jellyfish

Almost transparent bodies and long, finger-like tentacles give jellyfish a beautiful, almost ethereal appearance. Behind that beauty, however, lays a potentially dangerous sea creature with stinging cells (located within the tentacles) that can cause some serious harm. The box jellyfish, or sea wasp, that is common along northern Australia’s coasts is notorious for such a harmful sting.

    Symptoms of box jellyfish stings

Being stung by the sea wasp can leave victims with a variety of unpleasant, painful and potentially lethal symptoms including:

    • Breathing difficulties
    • Death of skin tissue
    • Severe pain or swelling
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Slow heart beat

Immediate medical attention is required, and preventing these stings is a matter of not swimming in box jellyfish infested waters. When heading for unfamiliar waters, it is therefore recommended to ask locals where it is safe to swim.

    Slips, trips and falls

Like elsewhere in the world, holidaymakers in Australia may also encounter unfortunate accidents causing slip, trip or fall injuries. Busy bars, restaurants, shops, and so on in popular tourist destinations do their utmost to prevent such incidents, but every now and then, accidents occur and tourists are injured by slipping on wet floors or tripping over some kind of obstacle or another.

    Travel accident compensation

Whether you sustained a trip injury or were injured in an accident on the road, if you suffered an injury in Australia, there is a good chance that you may qualify for personal injury compensation.
