Pedalos are small watercraft propelled by human-powered pedal-actions driving a paddle wheel. Typically featuring two or four sets of pedals designed to be operated in tandem, some pedalos feature a centrally positioned, odd set of pedals allowing a single person to operate a pedalo. Most commonly found on the calm waters of ponds, small lakes and in leisure/urban parks, pedalos are also offered for hire on beaches.
Pedalo-related injuries on lakes and ponds are usually fairly minor and may be the result of faulty pedals or other mechanical issues; splinters in seats or inexperience of or unruly behaviour by users.
Occasionally, people are also injured by tripping or slipping on their way to or while boarding pedalos. Slip or trip injuries can, depending on the circumstances, be more or less serious and include anything from cuts or bruises to broken limbs.
Pedalos and high tides
The risk of sustaining personal injuries when using pedalos on the sea is substantially increased by waves in general, but high tides in particular can be the cause of serious beach accidents. Often accompanied by strong currents, high tides can result in pedalos being thrown against rocks or dragged out into the open sea. This, of course, exposes users to the risk of sustaining potentially life-threatening injuries; drowning, suffering from exposure, dehydration and/or severe sun-burns.
If you suffered a pedalo related injury on holiday or on a day out, you may be entitled to claim travel injury compensation. In order to qualify for compensation, your injury must have been caused by someone else. It must also have been sustained within the last three years.
