The North Circular Road London, otherwise known as the A406, is a 25.7 miles long stretch of road crossing the north of the Big Smoke that links east and west London’s outer areas. Combining with the South Circular Road, it forms a C-shaped ring road through Outer London’s inner part. The River Thames crossing in the east is made via the Woolwich Ferry.
Speed limits and junctions
Featuring both single lane and dual carriage way stretches, the North Circular Road London has speed limits of 30, 40 and 50 mph.
Commencing at junction one of the M4 (Chiswick), the road encounters junctions with an array of major roads and motorways before terminating at the Woolwich Ferry and Beckton. Main roads and motorways intercepting the North Circular Road include the:
- A205, M4 and A4
- A315, A4000 and A4020
- A40, A4005 and A404
- A4088, A5 and M1
- A41, A502 and A1
- A598, A504 and A1000
- A109, A1110 and A105
- A111, A10 and A1010
- A1055, A1009 and A112
- A503, A104 and M11
- A113, A1400 and A12
The final three junctions before the West End are with the A118, A124 and the A13.
Preventing car collisions and other calamities
Varying lane numbers and speed limits, combined with high traffic volume and a myriad major junctions make assertiveness and responsible driving an absolute necessity if road accidents are to be prevented. This includes:
- Adhering to relevant speed limits
- Maintaining safe distances between vehicles to prevent vehicle collisions
- Keeping off mobile phones, as talking on mobiles and other distractions are common causes of motoring accidents
- Clearly indicating your intentions to other drivers, including signalling, and selecting correct lanes at junctions, for example
Traffic volumes can mean delays, so if you need to be somewhere on time, make sure you leave early enough to reach your destination without taking risks likely to cause a road traffic accident and accidental injuries.
