ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Fails 9

Like many other ice bucket challenges, the one shown in the clip below had a rather unexpected, far from happy outcome. The young man taking the challenge realises just after being drenched that his mobile phone is still in his trouser pocket. When it fails to work, he throws it to the ground in a fit of temper.

    It was just a phone

This young man should count himself lucky. He did, after all, only lose his phone, which can be replaced at some point. Others have suffered serious, even fatal accidental injuries while taking their challenges or immediately afterwards.

    Isselburg, Germany

One of the most recent tragedies caused by the challenge was the death of a 34-year old participant in Isselburg, Germany, at the end of July 2014. The man and 11 others thought it would be a great idea to use a JCB to perform their ice bucket stunt.

    Six people hurt

Unfortunately, the weight of 2,000 litres of water caused the digger to topple over when the shovel was raised, killing the man and hitting five others as it crashed to the ground. At the time this accident was reported, one of the five men had been treated for minor personal injuries, while the other four remained in hospital with serious injuries.

    Brittany, France

In June of 2014, a French participant, 19, drowned after riding his bike into a river in Brittany as part of his challenge. He was not the first to drown after entering a body of water to add something ‘special’ to his challenge.

    Senseless losses

Losing a loved one in a road traffic accident, for instance, is bad enough, but to lose someone for the sake of a so-called game has to be devastating. At least families of fatalities in motoring accidents may be able to ease at least some of the financial ramifications of losing someone. Car accident compensation will not bring people back, but it will help to cover medical and funeral costs, for example.

    Easing the burden

If you lost someone in an accident on the road that was caused by another road user, talk to someone at Accident Advice Helpline to see how they can help.
