    Accident in Hackney?

According to Department for Transport statistics, a total of 185,540 road casualties were reported during the year ending in June 2013. Considering the ever increasing amount of traffic on Britain’s roads, these figures are hardly surprising.

    Road traffic accidents in Hackney

Hackney has had its fair share of these incidents, with a total of 989 reported casualties of road accidents during the same period. According to the Transport for London fact sheet providing information on Greater London casualties, Hackney traffic accidents involved personal injuries to:

    • 202 pedestrians.
    • 285 pedal cyclists.
    • 159 motorcyclists.
    • 221 car occupants.

This fact sheet also revealed that out of these injuries by traffic accident, 842 were slight; 142 were serious and five of the sustained injuries were fatal.

Causes of accidents on the road

In most cases, vehicle accidents are caused by one or more of the following factors:

    • Excessive speeds.
    • Lack of due care and attention.
    • Tiredness.
    • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

While there are many other potential reasons for car crashes, more often than not they ultimately come back to one of these four main factors.

    Preventing motoring accidents

There is no doubt that many traffic-related accidents could be avoided by adhering to speed limits and/or reducing speeds to suit weather conditions; remaining alert and paying attention to other road users, driving conditions and so on; taking regular breaks to prevent becoming too tired to drive safely and refraining from drinking or taking drugs before getting behind the steering wheel.
