    Accident in Barnet?

Figures from Transport for London (TfL) published in 2010 showed that the borough of Barnet had the second highest number of road casualties in London for the year.

Whether it’’s motorcycle accidents, vehicle collisions or accidents with cyclists, the threats to safety on the road, particularly in busy areas, are both numerous and varied.

Why are there so many road traffic accidents in Barnet?

Perhaps the most alarming element of TfL’’s report was that it showed a 15% rise in the number of Barnet traffic accidents on the previous year.

A total of 1,403 incidents were reported and recorded, a number that would probably increase if crashes with untraced drivers were included. The number was three times that of incidents recorded in Harrow, the neighbouring borough.

The increase in traffic accidents in Barnet bucked a city-wide trend that saw a one-per-cent fall in road casualties across London.

Part of the reason for this high number of incidents on the road, as explained by Barnet Council, is that the borough boasts one of the largest and busiest road networks of anywhere in the country. It also has one of the largest populations of any London boroughs.

    How do traffic accidents happen?

There are a number of contributory factors to accidents on the road. The main ones include:

    • Traffic volume: It stands to reason that the more cars there are on the road, the higher the risk of a vehicle collision occurring. Unfortunately, when driving, you are as much dependent on the skill and vigilance of others as your own.
    • Traffic speed: The faster a car is moving, the longer it will take to stop or adapt to a sudden change in circumstances. Safe following distances are rarely obeyed, especially at busy times, which makes car crashes all the more likely.
    • Impatience: Drivers who are running late or in a rush may give in to the temptation to take risks on the road.

What makes a traffic accident compensation claim valid?

Providing the accident occurred within the last three years, was demonstrably not your fault and caused injuries that required medical attention, then you may have a strong case for travel accident compensation.
