£5 million paid in compensation by NHS Grampian

By David Brown on September 19, 2014

The last 10 years have seen over £5 million in compensation claims paid out by NHS Grampian relating specifically to maternity care which is claimed to have been below the normal standards.

The total cost over the 10-year period was £5,717,147. The total sum paid to claimants covered 22 cases in all over that period of time. The two highest pay-outs totalled £4.3 million; these were made in the same year in 2008/9. Only one out of the 10 years examined had no claims paid out at all. Most recently the year from 2013/14 saw two pay-outs made. These added up to £23,758 and were related to negligence with regard to maternity cases.

No further details were given regarding individual cases but NHS Grampian did make a statement in light of the information that has come to light. A spokeswoman said each claim is considered and investigated “very carefully”. Furthermore if the situation deems it appropriate NHS Grampian will “compensate a claimant”. The amount would clearly vary depending on the nature of the individual case, what occurred and how severe the experience and outcome is.

What could the potential consequences be of poor maternity care?

When you are expecting a baby you would expect to receive the highest care from medical staff at every stage. This holds true from the moment you have your first appointment to the moment you give birth, as well as receiving appropriate aftercare. While incidents involving poor care are thankfully rare, there is the potential for things to happen that can endanger the baby and/or the mother. This can turn what should be a lovely event into a stressful, worrying and even dangerous one. No one wants the need to claim compensation but as you can see the situation does sometimes arise.
