Over 200 people struck by food poisoning at annual food safety summit

By David Brown on October 30, 2014

Hundreds of people attended the Food Safety Summit’s annual conference but 216 found themselves ill with food poisoning after eating lunch at the event. Those affected experienced symptoms of nausea, diarrhoea and stomach cramps after eating a chicken masala dish which was said to be the cause of the outbreak. Only 7% of those who ate the dish remained healthy but 216 were infected by the Clostridium perfringens strain of bacteria, which is the third most common cause of food poisoning in the USA. There were reports of people falling ill during the conference but the catering company Centerplate failed to notify authorities immediately. Failure to keep the chicken at a temperature of 60C after cooking would have likely been the cause of the outbreak and would have caused the bacteria to multiply, making it toxic to those who consumed the dish.

The people affected phoned the emergency services to report their illness and two thirds of those who consumed the dish fell ill. Government investigations found that this dish was solely responsible for the outbreak and the catering company was given a list of recommendations after the event. It was also reminded of their health and safety responsibilities when preparing food for the public.

    Food poisoning and compensation

Food poisoning is caused when food is contaminated with bacteria or a virus and causes symptoms of nausea, diarrhoea and sometimes vomiting. It usually clears up after a few days of bed rest and fluids but some people may suffer a longer bout of poisoning depending on how much food is eaten and whether they have any underlying health conditions. Food hygiene regulations are there for businesses to follow and, if they have failed to follow them strictly, they could be putting the public at risk of contracting an infection. If you have been struck by food poisoning and wish to make a compensation claim, you can contact Accident Advice Helpline for assistance.
