£15.8 million in claims relating to Wishaw General Hospital since 2006

£15.8 million in claims relating to Wishaw General Hospital since 2006

NHS Lanarkshire covers a number of hospitals in this part of the country. However, one hospital alone – Wishaw General Hospital – has been responsible for over half the payouts met by NHS Lanarkshire in the last eight years.

The Freedom of Information Act has led to the information coming to light. The £15.8 million total has been divided into 58 separate claims. The amount varied according to the year. For example the year from 2006/07 saw £12,000 being divided between two cases. However, between 2009/10 there were seven claims settled for a total of £6.7 million. Clearly the severity of each individual case resulted in the disparity between payouts, but the total over the six years still amounts to a significant sum, especially in the context of NHS Lanarkshire as a whole.

Making a claim for compensation with regard to clinical negligence

While these figures are startling it should be noted that most hospitals provide a safe and responsible service to their patients at all times. Indeed the vast majority of those treated at Wishaw General Hospital receive good care regardless of whether they are in-patients or out-patients.

There is always the potential that incorrect diagnoses or treatments will be given or indeed withheld as they are believed not to be needed. If you should find yourself in this situation you should consider taking legal advice to see whether you have a case to bring for compensation regarding your situation.
