A Freedom of Information request carried out by the Employment Law Advisory Service has revealed that schools in the Greater Manchester area have paid out in excess of £1.5m in compensation over the last five years, for children injured on their premises.
In Rochdale, £8,000 was awarded to a pupil struck by falling goal posts and around £2,000 paid out to a pupil at another school. Out of the ten boroughs looked at, the majority of the successful claims (around 130) were for the Manchester area, with the total compensation payout reaching £943,848. In Tameside, a pupil injured whilst taking part in school activities received £22,326 whilst a child who was injured after another child pushed him received £9,494 in compensation.
Pay-outs in Manchester included compensation for accidents such as falling from climbing frames, fingers trapped behind heaters or in doors, slips and trips, and accidents caused by faulty school equipment. The total number of claims across the county was more than the total number of claims for Greater London and Birmingham combined – 225 claims in all.
The figures show that not enough is being done to protect children whilst they are at school – the majority of these accidents are preventable and more money should be invested in health and safety training by the government to prevent accidents from happening.
Has your child been injured in an accident at school?
Although you like to think of your child’s school as a fairly safe place, there are potential hazards lurking here as there are anywhere, and accidents can happen. However, if you feel that your child has been injured in an accident which could have been prevented by staff, you may be considering claiming for compensation. For example, if your child falls from faulty equipment or is injured whilst taking part in an activity that is not being properly supervised, this could amount to negligence on the part of the school. In instances like these, contacting a personal injury lawyer is vital to establish if a claim for compensation can be made.
