I work in a warehouse, undertaking various duties including unloading deliveries from the backs of lorries.
On the day of my accident I was using an adjustable conveyor belt, the height of which is regulated by two hydraulic bottle jacks.
I had been trained how to use the machine, but all the training in the world does not safeguard anybody is the machine is falling apart.
I was always apprehensive about using this particular machine as some of my colleagues had experienced difficulties with it before. These problems had been reported to senior management, who then proceeded to do precisely nothing about it.
As I was gingerly lowering the belt, the bottle jack collapsed and sent the conveyor belt into a frenzy. Quick as a flash, it caught my little finger and whipped it into the machinery mechanism, leaving me with a badly lacerated hand and broken finger bone.
I was able to claim nearly £3000 with the help of Accident Advice Helpline.
