I was at work in the kitchen of a busy hotel. As part of my duties as a chef I had to routinely carry a forty-litre saucepan full of potatoes and boiling water from a worktop to a cooker. On the day of my accident (a Saturday) I hoisted the pan off the work surface and was in the middle of carrying it across the kitchen when one of the handles had the temerity to snap off, sending seventy pints of scalding hot water everywhere, not least my foot.
I screamed in agony, as you might expect, and when I had managed to gather some air in my lungs I asked one of my colleagues to get me to hospital.
As I was being carried out, I had the presence of mind to tell my manager that he needed to put my accident in the book. Ever the professional, I also told him we needed a fresh pot of potatoes.
I was able to claim over £4000 for my injuries, which prevented me from working, playing football or Morris dancing for a month.
