Police have suggested that the death of a cyclist in Durham was not due to a road accident, but was more likely to have been the result of natural causes.
The man, who was estimated to have been in his 40s, was found by a fellow cyclist making his way to work on a remote path near a quarry at Quarrington Hill, south-east of Durham at about 7.45am today.
He did not appear to have suffered any injury, and was found lying beside his bike, which still had its light on.
"Judging by his clothing and the rucksack he was carrying police believe the cyclist was probably on his to work,” a police spokesman told the Northern Echo.
"There is nothing at this stage to suggest he was subject of a road collision.
"It is thought he may have suddenly been taken ill as he was riding his bike.
"Police are examining the scene and trying to identify the deceased so his next of kin can be traced."
