Stable-girl who fell on to metal spike avoids serious injury

by Alison Leon 3 November 2010

A stable-girl miraculously escaped without serious injury when her neck was impaled on a metal spike.

The accident happened when Jenny Butler, 24, an employee of Elms Farm in Depden, Suffolk, tried to restrain a horse that was attempting to escape and fell on to a fence.

Although the spike on which she fell went through her neck, amazingly it missed both her trachea and major blood vessels and she was able to call for help using her mobile phone. When her employer found her he was able to stabilise her until medical help arrived.

She was cut free and taken to West Suffolk hospital where the object was removed. She is expected to make a full recovery from her injury.

Her boss Andrew Read said, “She was very calm. She knew it was a serious situation. She was very lucky.”
