Farmer who spent nine decades in the same town died of head injury

A man who had never left Somerset in his 91 years of life died after sustaining a head injury on his farm, an inquest into his death has found.

Brunell Sparkes, from East Harptree, was admitted to Weston General Hospital in July after suffering a fall at his home on Castle Farm. The post-mortem found that he had fractured his skull in the accident, which came eighteen months after he had suffered a minor stroke.

His daughter Sharon told the court that, despite his increasing frailties, the family agreed that Mr Sparkes should continue to be cared for at home. He had a ‘history of falls,’ said his GP.

This is Bristol reports that the inquest was left in no doubt that Mr Sparkes’ fall was the cause of his death. His wife had died in 2005 and his health had deteriorated after that, his family said
